IMO fantastic senior man: Charlie is one of the absolute best firemen that I ever worked with in my 32 years on the job. Not just a consummate professional but a helluva guy to be on duty with. I transferred to L147 in 1977 after working in 2 other houses and attending ladder chauffeur school during the strike in 1973. So I was no rookie. One fire stands out in my severely fading memory bank. We responded 2nd due to an apt.house fire. 255/157 was there and as we passed them to go above, Lt. O'D dropped me off at the fire floor because I had the can and their man was missing. The 157 irons man (who was senior to me and on the Lt. list) gave me the axe and I hit his halligan many times as directed but of no use. Then he (gave up) asking if I had any ideas. I said yes and get out of the way. "What are you gonna due?" I said just back off. I used his axe to hammer the steel center of the door alternate sides and it began rolling down like opening a sardine can. He yelled "Lemme have a shot". I said "No way, you gave me the axe." Very embarrassing to their firehouse with their 2 officers who stood and watched.
Although exhausted I kept pounding until I heard someone shout "Hold it". I stopped . Without looking I knew it was my chauffeur who came to the fire floor. He reached in through the exposed top half of the door, opened 3 locks and pushed it in. Meanwhile 255 was so psyched up to get inside that I nearly got trampled as the door opened. I've seen this a few times before but not many. Charlie did it and so did the old buzzard Jim Sheil who's gone to fires in his moccasins. Sill learned from Charlie even with my 8 or 9 yrs.on at the time.
We missed him from the day that he had to leave "Da pride A Flatbush" to initiate his service connected retirement. Maybe I missed him the most! RIP old friend. God bless Pat and all the rest of the family whom I never met. A.W.
