I met Donald in the early 1970s. His father, Richie (Mr. Kenna to our team) was my hockey coach for the 70th PYC Kings hockey club. Richie was more than a hockey coach to me. My dad passed away and Mr. Kenna became like a father figure to me. The Kenna family would always warmly welcome me into their home for dinner or just to hang out. Donald made me laugh whenever we got together. Every time he’d ask, “hey Josh, are you going to the party?” I don’t remember the origin of that line but it would crack us up! I moved out of Brooklyn in the late 70’s but would run into Donald or his brothers at Ave. F reunion hockey games. Our love for hockey brought us together but our friendship lasted for decades.

When I hear the name Don Kenna, I think hockey, God, and hilarious.
Don was one of the reasons I fell in love with hockey as a kid. He was one of my dad’s best friends, we met him at church and he helped me become a better hockey player, Christian, and man. He trained me physically and was absolutely no nonsense towards me, even as a 10 year old! I vividly recall one morning he drove me from Brooklyn to queens for a 7am ice hockey game and the sky was pink from the approaching dawn, it was a glorious sight, and he said to me “Ralph, no one paints a picture like God”, I still use the line when I see a beautiful sky.
As a hockey player himself, he often got me access to hold birthday parties at fort Hamilton and manor road roller rinks with all my friends.., Don even reffed the games for us. Those are still the best birthdays and memories I’ve ever had and he was the reason I was able to enjoy them as much as I did
Don always had a fierce love for the Lord. I know in his struggles he sought Him, as any follower needs to. The impact of grace galvanized him to seek God. Some of my fondest memories of him was the way he spoke about salvation. He and my father were apart of a men’s group together, and I attribute my love for small groups in part from watching them interact in one.
Regardless of the setting, DK was one of the funniest men on earth. He could quote movies with emphasis and energy, and boy was his energy infectious. I looked forward to him coming over because I knew the house would liven up with jokes, sarcasm and ad libs.
I haven’t seen him in a while but he will always have a lasting impact on my life. I know he’s in heaven and that gives me great joy, knowing that his faith has become his sight! My deepest condolences especially to his boys. Fellas if you’re reading this, please reach out to me so I can be there for you like he was for me!
Until we meet again, Donald! I love you

I have had the pleasure of knowing Donald since he was 17 years old. We played roller hockey together for many years. We have always kept in touch and enjoyed talking about our families and our kids., along with hockey. He was a great story teller and kept me always entertained. When the phone would ring and I would see Donald ‘s name I knew I was in for a treat!! Time would just fly by as we talked endlessly. I am truly going to miss that and I’m really going to miss Donald. I would like to extend my deepest sympathies to Lisa,Ryan and Erik, as well as the entire Kenna family. Donald was very religious and I’m sure he’s up in Heaven trying to set up some roller hockey games!! Rest easy Donald! I love ya!
