Obituary of Joseph Francis Campbell
Joseph Campbell,92, passed away on April 20, 2024. He was born on January 29, 1932 in Red Hook, Brooklyn, the son of Mildred and William Campbell.
Survived by his devoted children, Mark, Michael (Patti), Joe (Geraldine), Monica Holstrom (Mark), and beloved grandchildren Meagan Campbell Thompson (Charlie),Daniel Campbell (Jenna),Dylan Campbell, Mark Holstrom, Brigid Lynch (Sean), Joseph Campbell, Marie Holstrom, and great grandchildren Charles Thompson and Kennedy Campbell.
Joe’s patriotism was tremendous. With immense pride he enlisted in The United States Army at the age of nineteen, serving during The Korean War. While in service he was a recipient of multiple medals, including The Korean Service Medal, The Bronze Star, The Good Conduct Medal and The Purple Heart. He was modest, and never spoke of what he had done to earn these awards.
Joe had several occupations. He worked on ships in The Brooklyn Navy Yard, he worked with The MTA as a train mechanic, and spent more than thirty years with The Department of Environmental Protection.
Joe enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren, and he was very supportive and encouraging to them.
To say Joe had strong opinions would be an understatement. He enjoyed conversing and discussing anything and everything…debates were also an option. Joe was never without a response, and always had an answer. The Daily News must have binders of Joseph F. Campbell’s Letter to the Editor.
Thanks for the laughs, Dad/Popi! You were truly one of a kind! May you rest in peace.
The family would like to extend their enormous gratitude to all who have reached out to support us during these challenging years while Dad/Popi suffered with the struggles of dementia.
We are indebted to the care he received from the devoted staff at Sunrise New Dorp, who treated our Dad/Popi very kindly, and with the respect and dignity he most assuredly deserved.
A memorial mass will be celebrated on May 1, 2024 11:00 at Good Shepherd Roman Catholic Church.
