I am the secretary at SUNY Maritime College (Humanities Department) and Mike would come by my office or we would pass in the hallway where he would retrieve his phone and show me vids or pictures of his grandson. He would beam as he scrolled. Such a proud granddad. Mike was such a kind and lovely person and he will surely be missed. My condolences to his family.

Thank you for sharing Michael with us. Before class he would pass my door and have a chat. He was so proud and happy to let us know he had a grandchild. He was so excited at her arrival. Michael was never a complainer about most things. Always smiling and pleasant to us all.
May the Angels come to greet you in Paradise, Michael,
RIP

Mike taught at Old Westbury for many years. I know his students enjoyed his World History classes very much. Mike was always very warm and kind every time he stopped by to say hello. As chair of department when the Covid pandemic upended the way we teach, I saw Mike adapt with the singleminded purpose of continuing to have an impact on the lives of students. We will miss him very much.

Mike always stopped by my office, even though I wasn't in his department, and asked how I was doing - what a kind man!
He listened very well and loved to talk about his family.
Mike will be missed.

Professor Matthews was a great educator filled with knowledge! I cherish the semester we had together and everything I learned from him at SUNY Old Westbury. He would always come to class with a big smile, his Diet Coke and all the jokes imaginable. It was an honor to learn from him. We will miss him dearly this semester and for the years to come. My prayers go out to Professors family & friends.

So sorry to hear the very sad news of the passing away of Mike. Please accept my sincere condolence.
Mike had been a very good colleague of mine. He had been a very intellectual and responsible teacher in the Dept. of History and Philosophy at SUNY at Old Westbury for many years. The conversations with him during the breaks between classes, especially during my service as a Dept. Chair, had always been encouraging and comforting. I will remember his kindness!

Mike, your friends and colleagues at Maritime College so miss your bright smile and dedication to teaching.
Thank you for all the times you popped into my office to say hello - and to tell me I'm doing a great job. I'll try to keep up that tradition and so help to keep your spirit in our hallways.

He was my professor in World History class. He would always never gave up on me, even if I didn't do well, he would always bring me happiness every time in the class. He was funny and yet love to teach to us and helps us remember the history and what they mean before taking the test. If anything, I owe him kindness and thank you in prayer for all the handwork he had made for me. Because of him, I was able to do well and gruated college Old Westbury. Thank you professor, for everything

I would like to give my condolences to the family of Michael Matthews. He was my prof at Suny Old Westbury, he taught my World History course. I had his class during a struggling time in my life and his kindness just made the world of a difference. I still mention him to some of my friends, about how he had a passion for teaching and how knowledgeable he was; but most importantly how kind he was. He brought a light to everyone’s life. I was just mentioning him to a friend a couple of days ago and saying how he was one of my favorite professors; so hearing the news of his passing came as a shock and I felt like the world lost an angel. Rest in peace Professor Matthews.

I am devastated to hear of his passing, and I wish his family strength and peace during this difficult time. May he rest in eternal peace.

Mike was the most cheerful and hardest working teacher I’ve known, and he taught tirelessly. You’d never know it from him: he never complained, which is why his death is such an unexpected blow. It seems like, and in fact it was almost yesterday that I saw him in the hall at Maritime. As always, he greeted me with, “How’s it going”” in his sunny, Irish-like lilt. He loved teaching, he loved his family and he loved his students and that love was returned. I’ll miss him.

My condolences to the entire family. Michael Matthews was my prof at Suny Old Westbury, he taught a World History course. History and I don’t really work well together so I struggled at times. Michael realized my struggles and pushed me throughout the entire semester. I admired his patience with me. Thank you so much. Rest in Peace Mr. Michael H. Matthews

As his department chair for most of Mike's years teaching history at the Maritime College, I am so grateful for his dedication to his students. He always stopped by the office with a cheery good morning before doing what he did so well - teach American History to young men and women. He will be missed.
